The Phoenix Artist Club, Covent Garden / Soho, London | Party Earth

The Phoenix Artist Club is kind of like a high school theater club, if that club was located in the basement of a West End theater, served lots of booze, and was populated by the Who’s Who of London’s established and aspiring theater scene.

Tucked around the corner from The Phoenix Theatre is a wide staircase that leads patrons down to velvety red curtains and the quirky, intimate bar space.

The amicably kitschy décor features a 1930s parquet floor, copper-topped bar, memorabilia from past productions, signed West End posters, and row upon row (upon row) of autographed headshots.

A late-night drinking license and budget-friendly prices on standard suds and grub make this members club the after-party spot of choice for West End’s theater crowd, though anyone is free to enter before 8pm – and stay long after.

Before or after a West End show, The Phoenix Artist Club is a worthwhile stop, and probably the best place in town for patrons to sidle up to a table and exclaim, “Hey!

The West End's best known 'secret basement bar', the Phoenix lurks beneath the theatre of the same name half way along Charing Cross Road.

It has all the airs of a members' club, yet you can wander in unchallenged before 8pm, then linger as long as you like.

Patrons have included (according to the web site) Princess Michael of Kent, Keira Knightley, Jude Law, David Soul, John Hurt and Janice Dickinson, presumably not all at the same time.

You're here to soak up the atmosphere, and the Phoenix has it by the eccentrically decorated bucket-load.

The Phoenix recently extended its opening hours in a bid to attract a lunch time crowd and freelancers with laptops.

If show tunes and spotting actors on their day off is your thing then bring that thing to the Phoenix, where actors can be bothered to the sounds of Les Mis playing in the background.Below the Phoenix Theatre is the bar, or more precisely the lounge, in which to gain entrance you’ll have to prove membership, turn up before 8 o’clock or just sneak by.

Maurice is the man who’s been looking after this garish paradise for years and more often than not you’ll find him circling the bar in a place that’s seems to be so seductive because familiarity breeds content-ment (I think that’s the phrase).

No matter when you show up it’s always the same and whether it was years ago or last week the heavy red gilded curtains, the secluded booths and the resounding cabaret of it all is still original. The walls are filled with the actors of the stage and even a cynic will find a bit of the romance about it and while it does have its fair share of couples it gets loud and bouncy as well.To keep up with the kitsch there are hot sausages on sticks at the bar alongside a few good beers, but this isn’t really a place to come for the drinks where it’s more about finding late-night mischief.

Phoenix Artist Club | Bars and pubs in Covent Garden, London

This legendary late-night bar and brasserie has been through something of a revamp over the last few years - all in an effort to return it to its art deco roots.

Membership is required to gain entry, but non-members can make a reservation in advance.

If you've been to the theatre then show the guys on the door your stub and, if there's enough room, they'll let you in.

Membership starts at £10 a month, or £100 a year.

Keep an eye out for cabaret, musical theatre open mic nights, impromptu performances and more - more often than not from West End casts (they often make a beeline for here).
